National School Nurse Day Profile:
Beth Kimzey

Beth Kimzey
Pittsburg Community Middle School
Pittsburg, Kansas

Beth Kimzey, RN is a school nurse for Pittsburg Community Middle School, and serves close to 700 adolescents.  She began her nursing career in the hospital setting, but was encouraged by her husband, a teacher, to consider school nursing.  Beth began subbing for school nurses on days they were absent, and when one of those nurses retired, she applied for the job!  Beth will tell you it’s more than a job, and that school nursing is a career that reaches far beyond the walls of the school.  Many students do not have access to a well-rounded support system, and she often finds herself connecting children to additional resources and looking for ways to meet a student’s bigger needs.  Beth was especially surprised by how many students just don’t have enough people demonstrating love and care for them, and she achieves her greatest reward in knowing she’s helping a child who doesn’t have that foundation.

Beth has been using CareDox for one school year, and already sees demonstrable ways it has helped pinpoint potential at-risk students.  In a school year where she has seen over 14,000 kids, Beth says she can easily pull up a record and gain instant familiarity with an individual, which she finds especially useful when it comes to medication management.

If Beth could give any advice to an incoming school nurse, it would be to have a background in the medical profession first.  Beth notes that school nurses work in a unique setting that relies on their own decision making skills, without the reliance on a supervisor or consultation with a colleague.

We wish you a Happy National School Nurse Day!
